MOTS-C is a 16-amino acid mitochondrial-derived peptide (MDP) encoded within the 12S rRNA gene of mitochondrial DNA. Discovered in 2015 at the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, it represents a novel class of signaling molecules linking mitochondrial function to nuclear gene regulation.

Mitochondrial-Derived Peptide

One of the first identified MDPs, demonstrating that mitochondrial DNA encodes bioactive signaling peptides beyond traditional respiratory chain proteins.

AMPK Pathway Activation

Research indicates activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a master metabolic regulator, through folate-methionine cycle modulation.

Metabolic Research Tool

Studied for its effects on glucose metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and cellular energy homeostasis in preclinical models.

MOTS-c is an exercise-induced mitochondrial-encoded regulator of age-dependent physical decline and muscle homeostasis

Reynolds JC, Lee C, et al. — Nature Communications, 2021

Investigation of MOTS-c's role in exercise-mediated metabolic adaptations and its translocation to the nucleus during metabolic stress.
